Allied Arts of Chattanooga awarded a $1,500 continuation grant to Dr.
Richard Jackson to support the Meacham Writers' Workshop.  UTC's Speakers
and Special Events Committee, Chattanooga State, Cleveland State, UTC's
English Dept., UTC's Honor Program, and Poetry Miscellany will also provide
support for the workshop this year.

The Meacham Writers' Workshop began several years ago with an endowment
bequest by Jean Meacham, a former UTC professor, who wanted a program for
area writers, students of writing and students in general to be available
free of charge.  Meacham directed that this program be kept informal,
encouraging young students to learn and understand the craft of writing,
and to have them interact with and meet older visiting and community writers.

Dr. Jackson is director of the program and the workshop has increased its
popularity and participants each year.

This year's Meacham Writers' Workshop will be held Nov. 17th-20th at UTC,
Cleveland State, and Chattanooga State.  The Staff and Visiting Writers
that will be participating in workshop include: Pat Aakhus, Robin Behn,
Earl Braggs, Harry Dean, Richard Jackson, Mark Jarman, Tomaz Salamun,
Richard Seehuus, Ken Smith, Luanne Smith, and Kevin Stein.

Congratulations go out to Rick Jackson and the English Department for
making the Meacham Writers' Workshop a success each year.  Great work and
good luck with the workshop this year!
