Subject: [UTCSTAFF] HUMAN RIGHTS WEEK
To Members of the UTC Campus:
In this time of impending war, it seems appropriate to try to raise our awareness and understanding of human suffering and to think seriously about how it can be alleviated. To this end, the Political Science Club has organized UTC's first ever Human Rights Week, beginning this coming Monday, March 24th. Each day next week, the campus community will have the opportunity to attend an event focused on an issue of great importance to human rights. These series of events have been made possible by the generous financial support of Dean Burhenn of Arts and Sciences, SGA President Kino Becton, SGA, the Speakers and Events Committee, and the Department of Political Science.

Shouldn' something be included about some rights threatened by the Patriot Act. I haven't studied it in detail, but i have in mind the matter that being declared a 'hostile combatant" obliterates the rights of even a US citizen. Should not the declaror be limited by some sort of judicial review or a judicial procedding such as indictment?
I an told that the Blount County (TN) Commission has recently passed a measure reaffirming the Constitution and Bill of Rights in this respect and is engaging in training of law enforcement personnel in implementing it. I am checking up on this to be sure.
