Please forward this message on to any and all appropriate students as soon as possible. They are requiring that at least one participant of the three per state selected be from an HBCU. Thanks very much, Ellie

I have been informed about a student (undergraduate and graduate) workshop being held at Marshall Space Flight Center from July 22-24, 2005. It is called Microbes in Space- A Bioassay Flight Hardware R D & D (Research, Design and Development) Workshop. This program is based on an apparatus that tests for the presence of gram negative bacteria on earth that is being re-engineered for use on the International Space Station and reduced gravity environments. Student participants will learn about the science behind the biological assay, perform the assay, participate in CAD tutorials, be given a seminar on flight hardware requirements and then break out into small groups guided by experience flight hardware scientists and engineers. In these groups they will brainstorm to develop a method and device by which the assay could be conducted in a reduced gravity environment. Break out groups will compete with each other to develop a feasible and innovative concept by which the assay could be implemented in space. After the student presentations are peer-reviewed by NASA experts, students will again break out into different specializations to help bring the selected virtual design through the steps to a virtual flight review.

The program is offered July 22-24, 2005 at the Tom Bevill Conference Center on the University of Alabama at Huntsville campus. Three students will be selected to attend from Tennessee, with all expenses paid. This is open to both undergraduate and graduate students, who must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Please let me know as soon as possible (by June 10 at the latest) if you are interested in attending this program. All costs will be covered-- this includes travel costs even if you are away from campus for the summer. I will let applicants know the week after June 10 whether they have been selected.

Thanks very much,

Ellie
