Kim Renz, Director of the Fine Arts Center, has received $1,250 from the
Tennessee
Arts Commission. This award funded the Nnenna Freelon performance. Nnenna
Freelon performed for the opening event of the 2001-2002 Patten Series at the
UTC Fine Arts Center on September 30,2001.

In addition to her performance on September 30, she made an appearance at the
Susan G. Komen Race for the CureŽ on Saturday, September 29, 2001, promoting
the fight against breast cancer. Ms. Freelon conducted an open workshop
at UTC for secondary and college students and for community members on October
1, 2001 as part of the Patten Series outreach.

Ms. Freelon is no stranger to Chattanooga. In fact this recent visit from Ms.
Freelon is a centerpiece of a block book tour supported by the National
Endowment for the Arts through the Southern Arts Federation.

Please join in congratulating Mr. Renz on his success in arranging this
community outreach project for both UTC students and members of the
Chattanooga community.
