LANNI MARCHANT NAMED SOUTHERN CONFERENCE FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. --- Distance runner Lanni Marchant was named
the 2007 Southern Conference Female Athlete of the Year Wednesday at the
SoCon's Annual Honors Dinner.

Marchant is the second consecutive UTC female track athlete to earn the
award as Shannon Wommack was the 2006 winner.

A native of London, Ontario, Canada, Marchant is a three-time NCAA
Championships Qualifier in track and cross country. She has eight SoCon
distance titles to her credit, including four in outdoor track, three in
indoors and one cross country.

This season, Marchant was named the SoCon Cross Country Runner of the
Year for her individual title at the SoCon Championships. Her
performance led the Lady Mocs to the team championship, and she earned a
spot at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.

Despite a stress fracture in her foot, Marchant claimed first place in
the SoCon Indoor 5,000-meter run. Her outdoor season was more
impressive, winning the SoCon Outdoor 5,000 and 10,000. Her winning
time of 35:06.53 in the 10,000 broke a 17-year-old SoCon record in the
event.

Marchant ends her career as a 14-time All-SoCon performer in indoor,
outdoor and cross country.

The Athlete of the Year Award is voted on by the SoCon athletics
directors and 11 media representatives. It is based on 70 percent
athletic achievement, 20 percent academic achievement and 10 percent
civic involvement.

Marchant graduated Magna Cum Laude from UTC in May with a degree in
Economics and a minor in Pre-Law. A regular on the Dean's List, she has
been named to the Track and Field Coaches Association Academic
All-America Team three times. She plans to enter Law School in the
coming year.

Her list of community involvement is difficult to match. She annually
participates in administrating local road races, volunteers as an
assistant coach at an elementary school and volunteers her time at the
Ronald McDonald House, with the Big Brothers-Big Sisters program and
with campus cleanups and food drives. She is also a member of UTC's
International Student Organization, the Political Science Club, the
Economic Club and the Pre-Law Club and tutors fellow UTC
student-athletes.

UTC's Athletics Hall of Fame committee recently presented her with the
A.C. "Scrappy" Moore Award, given to the student-athlete who best
personifies the Athletics Department's motto of Success with Integrity
through Academic Achievement and Community Service.

Marchant is the fourth UTC athlete to win the SoCon Female Athlete of
the Year Award. Other than Wommack, former distance runner Mary Jane
Middelkoop received the honor in 1997, and former basketball player
Jennifer Wilson won the award in 2003.
