The news that one of its members of many years service, Ron Moore,
died last Monday has saddened the department of history. Ron came to
the University of Chattanooga in 1960, after completing his Ph.d at
the University of Virginia. His doctoral dissertation was on English
piracy. He was department head from 1982 to 1989. Ron did not
retire from UTC until 1995; after his retirement from full time
teaching, he taught for another three years under the phased
retirement system that was in effect at the time. He loved teaching
and stayed in the classroom for nearly forty years. After the period
of his phased retirement was over, he returned to the department to
teach yet another course at adjunct wages.

A versatile teacher, Ron did heavy lifting for the department's
instructional program. He was one of the group in the department
that designed the two semester world history program that was a
required course for all entering students at UTC when it the private
college became part of the state university system in 1969. For many
years, he taught two semester courses on Medieval Europe and England
and the British Empire. During a period when enrollments for
upper-level history courses were declining, Ron took upon himself to
teach a course on War through Ages, which was aimed at ROTC students.
He also taught Heroes and Villains (another general education course)
several times. Ron was always known in the classroom for his wry
humor and command of the secondary literature.

A memorial service in Ron's memory will be held this Thursday (March
30) at 7:00 p.m. at Brainerd United Methodist Church. The family
will receive friends before the service at 6:00 p.m. at the church.
