To the University Community :
Reading is a key building block for all learning. Unfortunately,
many children fall behind in school because they do not learn to read early
and read well. A child must master reading by the third grade, or risk
falling further behind. To adddress this problem, AmeriCorps is sponsoring
a Read-A-Thon for local kindergarten classes. We would like to ask for your
help. Americorps is asking for all University offices and organizations to
participate by acting as volunteer readers. This event will take place from
1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m on March 26, 1999.
Support is needed from all areas of the UTC community. Volunteers
will be reading to kindergarten classes at participating schools throughout
the area. The time is set between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. to accommodate
the different lunch schedules of the various schools. AmeriCorps will be
providing all the books and supplies needed for the event. What is needed
are Volunteers. We would like to encourage the participation of students,
faculty, and staff.
If you would like to participate in this event please call our
offices at (423) 785-2229 or email me at [log in to unmask] I look
forward to your future participation in AmeriCorps. Attached is a list of
the schools involved.
