TO: University Faculty and Staff at all UT campuses
FROM: President John W. Shumaker
SUBJECT: On the job

I have finally arrived in Tennessee! After a productive and thoughtful
transition from the University of Louisville, I moved into the residence on
Cherokee and am officially in the President's Office in Andy Holt Tower. I
look forward over the next few months to visiting with as many of you as
possible, as together with the Board and leaders in this state, we shape
the agenda for The University of Tennessee.

I spent several days in Nashville last week to promote the continuing need
for additional revenue for our University and this state. Our Board of
Trustees will be meeting later this week, as well as the University of
Tennessee National Alumni Association Board of Governors. I look forward
to dialogue with these leaders who successfully promote the needs of our
University. Over the next few weeks, I look forward to visiting each of
our campuses and institutes, as together we review our mission and purpose.
The transition period built into the search process over the past several
months has been most successful in better understanding statutory,
structural, academic and athletic issues. I am beginning my third
presidency with a great deal of enthusiasm. I plan to involve the
University's constituency groups - students, faculty, administrators,
alumni, government leaders and the public, at large - in the work and
progress of this great University.

I will have a President's web site containing pertinent information and I
welcome your input. Together, we will provide the best quality education
Tennessee can afford, while striving to encourage the people of this state
to afford the best - our future depends on it!
