Here is some important news for all of us:

As we look at our state's budget process, wondering why no one in office
seems to understand the importance of paying for a quality education, I
hope we all will remember to put in a good word for the arts here in
Tennessee.

Let me put it simply and personally. What would my life be worth without
music, theatre, dance and visual arts?

Nothing.

>Those of us who care about the arts in Tennessee need to make note of two
>upcoming events. First, representatives of the Tennessee Arts Commission
>and Tennesseans for the Arts will be in Chattanooga this Thursday, February
>28, at 10:00 a.m. at the Chattanooga Theatre Centre to discuss the funding
>situation for the Commission.
>
>Then, on March 19, arts supporters from all across the state will gather in
>Nashville for the annual Arts Advocacy Day, an opportunity to learn about
>issues around arts funding and to let the Legislature know what the impact
>of cuts at the Tennessee Arts Commission will be on local arts and arts in
>education programs.
>
>In fact, we've already been notified that funding from the State to
>subsidize the cost of needy children attending cultural field trips has
>already been eliminated for next year, and more cuts are expected.
>Altogether, arts programs in Hamilton County could lose as much as $200,000
>from the State next year, and that's bad news.
>
>If you want to learn more or add your voice to those who are concerned about
>such cuts, plan to attend either or both events. Both are free. You can
>get more information on our website at www.alliedartschattanooga.org.
>
>There are lots of great exhibits and performances taking place this week.
>Friday is March 1, which means Friday Freebee at the Hunter-a great
>opportunity to see the moving Jacob Lawrence exhibit at no charge.
>
>Theatre fans will have several treats this week. The Chattanooga Theatre
>Centre opens its hilarious production of Neil Simon's "Rumors" this Friday.
>The Broadway smash, "Rent", will also be in town at Memorial Auditorium this
>weekend for shows on Saturday and Sunday.
>
>If you have only 30 minutes at lunch on Thursday, you can take in Theatre
>Sandwiched In's production of offbeat revue sketches by English playwright
>Harold Pinter at Wiley United Methodist Church, 504 Lookout Street. You
>can't beat the price-free!
>
>There are many more arts events this week, which you can find on our website
>at www.alliedartschattanooga.org. There you can also get information on
>times, locations, and purchasing tickets.
