n response to the responses to Dr. Craddock's listing of the "old" Toxic Air Study I would like to add that newer data are available. If you are really interested in the "foulness" of our over-rated city (speaking in terms of an "Environmental City") then I suggest that you take a great deal of time and investigate the data that are available on EPA's URL (not to mention the tomes of data that are available elsewhere).
In pareticular check out the maps of the toxic release inventories. It list the compounds released to the air, surface water, well injections, on-site storage, and landfill applications. We indeed live in a toxic dump. Enjoy.
