The UTC community is invited to a cherry tree planting in the quadrangle
near Patten Chapel on Monday, Feb. 22 at 10 a.m. Students from the
University Honors program will speak at the ceremony. Light refreshments
will be served in Founders Hall following. In the event of rain, the
program will take place in Patten Chapel.
The planting is being held this year as part of the national George
Washington Bicentennial Community Program commemorating the 200th
anniversary of George Washington's death. For information on other events
being held across the nation visit http://www.gwashington1999.org/.
According to Dr. North Callahan, a 1930s honors graduate of the
University of Chattanoga and chairman of the event, "The legend of young
George Washington cutting down the cherry tree and being truthful with his
father about it is a symbol of his honesty and great character." Dr.
Callahan is professor emeritus of history at New York University and the
author of several books on American history including biographies of
Washington.
