The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Office of Safety and Risk
Management has requested the assistance of the Hamilton County Health
Department and Hamilton County Emergency Services to assist in the
clean up of a hazardous material spill on campus.
University officials notified local authorities and the
federal Environmental Protection Agency last week of a mercury spill
in Grote Hall. The spill occurred during the move from Grote Hall
into the new Engineering, Mathematics, and Computer Science building
and was reported to University safety officials last week.
Air and surface testing of the spill site was conducted by
Ferguson-Harbour Hazardous Materials Cleanup Company, which
determined the level of elemental mercury did not pose a significant
health risk.
Weekend cleanup was successful in Grote Hall and the new
Engineering, Mathematics , and Computer Science building. A meeting
has been scheduled for today with the Hamilton County Health
Department. We will be sending more information following this
meeting.
