Faculty Colleagues,

I visited this morning with a young man who was graduated from UT
Chattanooga more than eight years ago. He told me that he still
wonders about the low turn-out of faculty for his 1996 graduation.

As this young professional explained to me, college graduation is one
of the three or four "big events" in a person's life. He said, in his
mind, the big life-events are birth, church confirmation, college
graduation, marriage, the birth of children, and death (From my
point of view, he left out the births of grandchildren).

Nevertheless, the young man said that he really wanted to see his
faculty and to introduce some of his favorites to his "other family"
on one of the biggest days of their lives--his graduation from
college. He said that, as far as he could tell, not one of his
department's faculty members attended that commencement back in
1996... and, here we are eight years later, and he's still talking
about the disappointment.

Commencement is a big thing for most of our young people. The
celebration of Sunday, May 2, 2004, will rank for many of our
students with marriage, birth of children, and other major milestones
of life.

If you can, please share the day and the celebration. As my good
buddy Dr. Bender wrote to us a week or so ago:

Commencement is Sunday, May 2, at 2 p.m. in the McKenzie Arena. The
faculty will be marching in first, so faculty should be in line by
1:40.

We hope that most of you will attend as your being at the
commencement and at the reception which follows means a great deal to
the graduates and their families. Information about the speaker is
available at the following URL: http://www.utc.edu/homenews/ag.html.

Hope to see you Sunday at 1:30 or so...
