Even though those of us in Chattanooga may not have felt the physical
impact of hurricane Katrina as much, we are still dealing with the
emotional impact.  As we watch the recovery effort, we experience a wide
range of emotions.  For those who have been through other natural
disasters or other types of trauma, this time may be particularly
difficult.  Here are some tips to help all of us get through this time:

 

Remember that anxiety levels may be a bit higher than usual.  People may
have a lower frustration tolerance than usual, and it will be important
to give each other a break.  

 

Remember to check your own level of frustration and anxiety.  When you
feel like being short or irritable, give yourself some time away from
the situation, take a break from whatever is causing you to be anxious.

 

Take care of yourself by eating right, getting enough sleep, and
exercise.

 

Don't use substances like alcohol or other drugs to lessen your level of
emotion or anxiety.

 

Talk to others about how you feel especially if you have loved ones that
you are worried about, or if you are disturbed by the coverage of the
events.  

 

Remember to focus on what you can do as opposed to what is beyond your
control.  If you feel hopeless or powerless about the situation,
consider ways you can help given your individual situation.

 

If you begin to feel anxious or depressed by watching the coverage,
limit your viewing to only one news program per day., or even less if
necessary.

 

Don't forget about the rest of your life: school, job and other
responsibilities are still important.  Don't let your attention
overshadow your responsibilities.  It will not help the survivors of the
disaster if your life becomes problematic.
