Prior to the Faculty Council meeting at 3:00 today, during which I
intend to share the results of my informal survey with colleagues and
ask them to support resolutions asking that Fifth Street be returned to
its previous state and McCallie Avenue and Bailey/MLK be left in their
present states, I thought I would post one more update. Thanks again to
everyone who has responded. I hope we can get something done (or in the
case of McCallie/MLK/Bailey, not done).
With regard to Fifth Street:
41 agree with me that it should be restored to two lanes;
0 have stated that the three-lane configuration we have now is
actually superior
(although one person likes the bike lane "in theory" but
doesn't actually use it because it is too dangerous and
another thinks that three lanes are no worse than two);
10 people have given "other" responses ranging from "undecided" to
"it's a tough choice" to "speeding and/or ignorance is the real
problem" to "I don't think it is a problem" to "let's put in
speed bumps" to "let's close Fifth Street altogether and grass
it over for green space" ...
Not as many people have offered opinions on the proposed changes to
McCallie and MLK/Bailey, but of those who have:
18 agree with me that the proposed changes would create a mess;
1 thinks the two two-way streets would actually be better;
1 is undecided;
1 thinks it would not be a problem and we shouldn't worry about it
Several people have also questioned the changes to Riverside Drive
downtown near the aquarium....
