Perhaps that's why my daughters' friends and other parents would consider me
a prude, but subject matter like this is why we don't allow our daughters to
have Internet access in their own room.

We have policies at our house such as
1. keep bedroom doors open
2. no phone calls after 9 p.m.
3. no TVs in kids' rooms.

It all goes back to the decline of values in the American family. We need to
teach our children values and morals and hold them accountable. Suffer
consequences if they misbehave.

Is it really so terrible to tell our children "No?" Our daughters are 14 and
11 and they do not have a cell phone (unlike most children their age)...they
do not have a TV in their room ... they do not have Internet access in their
own room ... Our home computer with Internet access is highly filtered.

And guess what? They're doing just great. They've learned to read well,
expand their minds, use their imaginations and learn morals and values that
are pleasing not only to us, but to God.

While I find the link Sherry sent repulsive and sickening, it should serve
as a wake-up call.

This past week, due to circumstances beyond my control, I have found out way
more than I ever wanted to know about the secret internet lives of
teenagers.  It is shocking and horrifying to find out that your 14-17 year
old girls might not be as sweet and innocent as you believe them to be, and
I would not wish this type of discovery on any parent.  And if you don't
think its that bad, I encourage you to go onto MySpace.com, and browse some
of the profiles of the 14-17 year old kids who are on there.  The following
link is a picture that was taken from an actual profile listed publicly on
MySpace.com, for all the world to see.  With the exception of editing the
language, the text inside the box next to the picture is as it appears on
her website.  I have been advised that posting this picture may subject me
to attack here on Raven, due to the recent discussions of political
correctness and inappropriate content, but I feel very strongly that parents
need to see this stuff.  We need to protect our kids, and I will endure
whatever flaming comes my way, if it means that some parent becomes a bit
more aware and cautious.

Do you as parents know where your kids spend their time when they are on the
internet?  This is an exhortation to all parents out there - please check up
after your kids!!!  Monitoring their email and their internet surfing
history is NOT an invasion of privacy, it is an endeavor to protect them,
and protecting them is your responsibility and sworn duty as a parent.
 
Life is dangerous..don't let experience be your kids' teacher.
