Hello:

Just a reminder that the Retrace panel discussion event about Turbulent, by Iranian-American artist Shirin Neshat, will be presented at the Hunter Museum tonight. Cash bar is at 5:30 pm, event begins at 6:00 pm. All are invited. UTC faculty, staff and students get in free.

Sponsored by SEED, Hunter Museum of American Art and Allied Arts.

Panelists include:

Dr. Palmira Brummett from the Department of History at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville; Dr. Talia Welsh of the Department of Philosophy and Religion at UTC; Patrick Sweetman of the Department of Theatre and Speech at UTC, Jillian Klean-Zwilling of the Department of Theatre and Speech and the Women's Studies Program at UTC; Rebecca Targ of Seed will moderate the discussion.

Neshat's video installation, "Turbulent," metaphorically examines the political nvironment of her native Iran. The work is projected on two screens, one depicting a man passionately singing a love song in a theatre of men, and the other depicting a woman in an empty auditorium whose ululations defiantly challenge the Muslim law against women singing in public. Neshat's choice of music and song allow her audience
to explore many complex and emotionally charged issues.

Audience members will view the video installation, then the panelists will discuss the video from the perspective of their respective backgrounds.

"Shirin Neshat: Turbulent" opened Nov. 18 at the Hunter Museum and runs through Jan. 14, 2007. Retrace, the panel discussion, will take place at the Hunter Museum. It is open to the public and is included with museum admission. The program is free to Hunter Museum members, members of SEED, and UTC faculty, staff and students. Attendees may make donations to SEED, who hope to continue coordinating contemporary art shows in Chattanooga. There will be a cash bar from 5:30 until 6 p.m., the video will be viewed at 6 and the discussion will happen immediately following.
