Upon reading Eli Fly's and Bill Stacy's e-mail messages it was not with
great pleasure that I read today's paper regarding cuts in the higher
education budget. While we can say to ourselves that it won't happen, the
reality is that the DOGS budget is coming closer to being passed than any
of us thought months ago. Having been at a university that faced similar
problems and after seeing many colleagues at that university being forced
to leave, I am very nervous that cuts will be the a reality. I encourage
all of us to contact our legislators and demand some action on the
budget. Raiding the reserves or the highway fund does not solve the budget
question, it only leaves the problem to the next legislature, which I hope
will have more courage to act than the current legislature. Lets hope that
our "leaders?" can agree on some solution.
