Bad Smell Permeates Hamilton County

Richard Simms

February 6,2007

Chattanooga firefighters have been busy this morning responding to reports of gas leaks and other strong odors. The firefighters use sophisticated gas monitors when responding to these calls, and so far, none of the odors have involved natural gas. A representative with the Chattanooga Gas Company says they've had roughly 80 calls in the last few hours, but no leaks have been found. According to Fire Department spokesman Bruce Garner, there have been reports that the odor originated from a paper processing plant located to the north of Bradley County, but no official sources have confirmed that. The Chattanooga-Hamilton County Air Pollution Control Bureau is also trying to track down the source of the odor.

The Bureau says there are also paper mills in north Georgia and north Alabama, but again, the odors so far have not been identified with those plants either. While the source of the odor is not known at this time, responders with the Chattanooga Fire Department and Chattanooga Gas Company have all said that the odor poses no danger to area residents.

Or could it be just the usual stinky downtown odor we've all come to know and love?

Subject: [UTCSTAFF] Possible Source of Brock Hall Smells

Consider this:

I am trying to find a “lady-like” way to say this, but finding none, …here goes.

Have you considered that the gas like smell in Brock may be a combination of “B.O.” body odor, bad breath, and expellants of human gas?

I know this sounds gross, but this time of year with things being shut in against the elements of winter, produce strange and vile odors that are directly associated with improper hygiene and human functions of the bowels, i.e. gas.

By the way, Brock Hall is not the only place experiencing such smells. I got an almost fatal dose just the other day, as I boarded the elevator from the fourth floor to take a quick ride to the second floor, as its prior occupants had cut loose in the elevator! Someone apparently had chili for lunch and it was back-firing on them! This mixed with the smell of tennis shoes, bad breath and body odor had me gasping for breath. I stumbled out of the elevator, disoriented and nauseated. Now you’re talking about a human gas leak! Adding the improper hygiene to it was enough to shut down the elevator and the entire building for a few hours. Thank goodness there was an open door on the second floor foyer to provide some ventilation. I assure you, …there was none to compare to it! However, I did reframe from calling Chip, since I quickly surmised the source of the leak.

So perhaps this is the source of Brock’s unpleasant smells, hidden within winter’s content. Until another source is identified, …at least this is something to consider.

I know I have said what others would dare not say. But I bet you, I am not the only one out there in Ravenland who was thinking the same thing!!!!

Subject: [UTCSTAFF] Facilities Update: Brock Hall "Smell"

Faculty, Staff, and Students,

As many of you are well aware, Brock Hall continues to have what has

been described as a "gas smell" permeating the building. Both the

Chattanooga Fire Department and our own Office of Safety & Risk

Management have tested the building for toxic and combustible gases; no

traces of either were present in the building. Though the smell is in

no way hazardous, we realize that it poses a distraction and a nuisance

to everyone in the building. Currently, the Facilities Department and

the Office of Safety & Risk Management are working together to locate

the source of the odor. We apologize for the nuisance and ask for your

continued patience in this matter.

Thanks,

Chip
