Dr. Rob Mebane of Chemistry was recently awarded $30,684 for
a two-year grant from the Research Corporation to develop his project
entitled, "Catalytic transfer Hydrogenation with Raney Catalysts and Water
as Hydrogen Donor." He will receive his award in yearly installments of
$15,342.

This student research project will attempt to prove that water is capable
of donating a hydrogen atom for catalytic transfer hydrogenation using
Raney catalysts. Not only will students gain hands-on experience in an
organic
research environment, but they also will use state-of the-art
instrumentation, such as the Chemistry's department'snewly acquired gas
chromatograph-mass
spectrometer. Furthermore, students will have the chance to learn
important information management skills and may have the opportunity
to present their research at conferences on the regional or national level.

Congratulations to Dr. Mebane for securing the funds to support this
opportunity for student research.
