(Below please find the minutes of the March NCAA Self-Study Steering
Committee. The Steering Committee will meet this afternoon in the Sequoyah
Room. All are in invited.)


NCAA STEERING COMMITTEE
March 27, 2002

Paul Watson, Committee Chair, called the meeting to order at 3:40.

Minutes - The corrections from previous minutes as indicated by Oval Jaynes
 and not included in the minutes were discussed.  The minutes will be
corrected to reflect the corrections.  Oval will be contacted to ensure the
corrections are accurate.  Also, Leroy Fanning's report should be included
in the last minutes as well.

Individuals giving reports should submit a written copy to the chair and
the secretary for inclusion in the minutes or as an attachment.

The minutes were approved with the necessary corrections.

Meeting with Chancellor - Paul Watson stated that he met the Dr. Stacy and
informed him of the decision to continue the report without an athletic
director.  He stated that if the new AD wants changes in the plan it could
be amended.

Progress Reports:

Barbara Wofford reported that statistics needed for the equity portion of
the report have been requested from Ralph Manning. Laura Mincy has
completed a draft of the Gender Equity statement.  UTC will be represented
at the NCAA Title IX conference next month in Arlington, VA and information
will be shared with the committee to assist them in the self-study.

Oval Jaynes reported that Jeff Romero will have the Minority Report
completed by April 15.

In the absence of Bill Miller, the Fiscal Integrity Committee Chair, Paul
Watson read an e-mail from Bill indicating that the committee met on March
7. The following timeline was given by the committee:  First Draft - April
30th; Editing - May 20th; Report to be available at May 29th meeting; Final
report - June 14th.

Paul Watson reminded the committee that the self-study is a two-step
process - data collection and recommendations.  He stated that for the
report to be valuable, the data collected must be of good quality and
evaluated carefully before reporting recommendations.  After drafts are
received, the Steering Committee will evaluate each section.

Leroy Fanning reported that his committee has met.  They hope to present a
preliminary report to the Steering Committee at the April 24 meeting.  They
hope to construct the recommendations by May 1.  Paul Watson recommended
that the draft be sent to the committee via e-mail before the next meeting
to give members an opportunity to look over the report.

Suggestion - It was suggested that Isaac make an e-mail list of the
Steering Committee members.

Additional Correction - Oval Jaynes asked that the minutes be corrected to
reflect that he has been involved in athletics for 40 years instead of 51.

The meeting was adjourned at 4:05 p.m.
