WOMMACK, MAYNE SOCON RUNNERS OF THE WEEK

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Chattanooga distance runners Shannon Wommack and Ian 
Mayne were named the Southern Conference Runners of the Week the league 
office announced Wednesday.

Wommack, a three-time All-American, set an event record with a time of 
17:03.81 at the Greater Louisville Classic 5K to take first in a race 
featuring 270 runners. She led the Lady Mocs to a second place finish in 
the 32-team event finishing just behind Ohio State. The previous race 
record was 18:04.70.

"Shannon is one of the top runners in the country and is in contention 
every time," UTC Head Coach Bill Gautier said. "It's good for a coach to 
know that he's got that going for him."

Mayne, placed fourth out of a field of 307 runners in the 8K race with a 
time of 24:31.81 . His time is the fastest clocked in the SoCon this year 
and the Mocs placed sixth out of 35 teams. This is his second Runner of the 
Week honor this season.

"Ian is doing what seniors are supposed to be doing," Gautier said. "He is 
putting in his time and he's becoming a leader. I'm proud of his 
accomplishments."

Both runners were selected cross country and track ESPN The Magazine 
Academic All-America in the University Division by the College Sports 
Information Directors of America last season for work in and out of the 
classroom.

Chattanooga will be back on the course Saturday, Oct. 8 at the Auburn 
Invitational in Auburn, Ala.
