This summer has been a very exciting time for Computing Systems
and Networks and the entire Information Technology Division at UTC:

- Oak Ridge National Lab has been linked into campus over a very
fast Gigabit network connection.

- A new firewall and traffic shaping equipment are installed now
to protect the campus network with it's valuable and, at times,
confidential information systems, and to improve reliability.

- A computing Security and Abuse team was put together to respond
to campus misuse of computing and networking resources and to
ongoing but always changing external threats (send complaints via
email to [log in to unmask] or call the help desk at 4000). Everyone
should become familiar with the Acceptable Use Practices Policy
at UTC at http://www.utc.edu/Teaching-Resource-Center/AUP/ .

- A new core routing and switching networking "engine" (a Cisco
6509) is installed and operating for the campus.

- Plans are in place, with equipment being purchased and cabling
being done, for a 10x speed increase (to Gigabit) for the campus
backbone network to keep up with the rapid growth in the use of
computing and networking at UTC.

- New and improved services are on the horizon for this academic
year, including (with more to come):
   * Secure disk space storage for electronic documents for all,
students, faculty, and staff, that will be available over the
Internet from home or dorm room, just like it will be in the
office or the lab on campus.
   * Web based access to ASIS (Automated Student Information System)
for faculty and advisors.

Are you interested in technical discussion of UTC's evolving
computing and networking services, help desk services, or other
aspects of centralized Information Technology on campus?

Do you want to participate in early release of services and help
us test to find and solve problems?

Do you run a server on the campus network?

If any of these questions describe you, and you are not already
subscribed to the UTCIT mailing list, please subscribe by sending
a message with the text "subscribe UTCIT firstname lastname"
(without the quotes and with your real first name last names)
to [log in to unmask] or go to

the List".

Even if you don't subscribe, see what you've missed by going
to the same link and browse through the past messages archive.
