Dr. Hunter Huckabay, of the College of Education and Applied Professional
Studies, has been awarded $293,519 to fund the third year of a five-year U.S.
Department of Education’s GEAR UP Program.

UTC in conjunction with the Hamilton County Department of Education
and eight other community partners will implement GEAR UP services
in Franklin, Orchard Knob, and Chattanooga Middle Schools, which are
three inner-city schools that demonstrate the highest need in Hamilton
County. The GEAR UP program will provide educational and social services
to children at the targeted schools including tutoring, training in
study skills, test taking skills, critical thinking skills,
mentoring, and life skills training. In addition, long term
course selection assistance and financial aid and college admission
information to students and their parents will be provided.

In the past two years, GEAR UP has been cited as a major factor in improving
reading/writing scores for Franklin and Orchard Knob Middle Schools. Not
only
has the program involved working with over 30 teachers to improve reading
across the curriculum and but it also has provided over 140 hours mentoring
and tutoring for more than 120 7th & 8th graders at Franklin, Orchard Knob
and
Chattanooga Middle Schools.

Please join in congratulating Dr. Huckabay on the continued success of this
project at UTC. Dr. Hunter Huckabay awarded $293,519 for the GEAR UP Program
