To UTC Faculty and Staff:

The City of Chattanooga will soon be embarking on a project called "A Tale
for One City," which involves the promotion of a citywide reading program.
One book will be chosen as this year's selection, and everyone in the city
will be encouraged to read this book, and then to meet in groups throughout
the community to talk about it. The program is a way of promoting literacy,
but also a way to bring people in the community together to find common
threads that they share. Other cities throughout the country have engaged
in this type of community-building project with considerable success.

A preliminary screening committee was formed to select five books, from
which the final selection will be chosen by public vote. I invite you to
cast your ballot and to encourage your students, colleagues, associates and
friends to vote between now and November 20. The five books are:

All Over but the Shoutin', by Rick Bragg
Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, by Ernest Gaines
Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, by Fannie Flagg
Tuesdays with Morrie, by Mitch Albom
Walking Across Egypt, by Clyde Edgerton

You can cast your ballot by sending an email to one of the following addresses:

UTC is proud to co-sponsor this citywide event, which has enjoyed wide
success in many communities throughout the country. I encourage everyone in
the UTC family to participate now in the selection of the book, and again
when the choice is announced. It is the kind of event that demonstrates our
commitment to literacy, to education, and to building a better community.

Thank you,

John Friedl
