Brenda Simmons, Coordinator of the College of Education's Americorps
program, has been awarded $60,000 by the Tennessee Department of
Education's Goals 2000 program.  Ms. Simmons will use these funds to
implement a Parents and Students Success (PSS) program at Eastlake
Elementary School.

PSS focuses on increasing the academic performance of students with
behavioral problems and increasing the educational involvement of at-risk
students' parents.  PSS will meet the needs of at-risk students by
providing in-school tutoring services.  The program will also address the
need for incresed parental involvement by requiring that parents attend
four hours of program activities each day that their child is suspended
from school.
