Dr. Lynn Ourth, Professor of Psychology, has received $50,000
from the Hamilton County Community Services Agency (HCCSA) for
Mentoring and Tutoring Services. Dr. Ourth will coordinate a
program where upper level UTC psychology students serve as mentors
and tutors for 12 to 18 year-old children in Hamilton County
who have been referred to juvenile courts or the Department of Children
Services.
Dr. Ourth has designed this program so that it provides a dual benefit to
the community: UTC students will gain valuable applied experience in
working with children and families at-risk, and families will be better
prepared to foster their children's academic and social success. Dr. Ourth
and the student mentors will serve somechildren in state custody, working to
successfully re- acclimate them to home and family life. For children
already living with their families, Dr. Ourth and the student mentors will
help
stabilize children's lives and improve their bonds with their families and
communities.
Congratulations to Dr. Ourth! The services provided in this program will
be of great benefit to children and families in Hamilton County, and the
applied experience gained by UTC students will increase our community's
capacity to support children and families at risk.
