I recently got a flu shot from the privately run facility on campus. While there, I chatted with one of the nurses. I was dimly aware of the problem she made clear to me. Many of our students do not have private medical insurance. So they have to pay out of pocket for every service they receive, although the facility provides some assistance gratis. We now are requiring students to pay an athletics fee every semester. Why don't we have a health care fee? How much would it cost so that all our students could receive at least minimal care when they need it? When I was a freshman in college I spent three or four days in the college infirmary with the flu. The cost was borne by a mandatory health fee. I realize that we probably will never have an infirmary here but it seems to me that we could do better. Perhaps there is something about this problem that I do not understand.
