To all,

I have been in close contact with the "powers that be" in the athletics department these last couple of days over this issue, and I just want to report their response. They were very appreciative of my concern, and agree that maybe this issue should be addressed for the future. I have also been in contact (after the exam) with the student in question and he and I have communicated. He knows, I think, that I was just trying to look after his best interests academically. He WAS in class the last day, but did not sign my roll, so that is why I made the (wrong) assumption that he wasn't there. In a large class as mine (96 on the roll, with an average of around 70 actually showing up), it is hard to eyeball all of them individually. They tend to become a "sea" of faces.

I have had another faculty member e-mail me about the softball team having to play an out of state game DURING finals last spring, which is also crazy, and she says that the committee that approved THAT, now agrees.
The good that I hope comes of all this, is that maybe our student athletes won't have to deal with this dilemma in the future. As I told the athletic director and coaches, my experience on the whole with student athletes is that they are some of the most committed students that I have in this "monster" (size-wise) general ed class.
I still stand by my feeling that to make these guys travel the day before exams, travel late the night before exams, and then be expected to do well on an exam at 8 a.m. the next morning is a bit much to expect, even with tutoring "on the road". How well would YOU be able to concentrate on something important while riding a bus?
Ok..I'm back to grading papers now................
