Colleagues,

The Advisory Search Committee for Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic
Affairs has carefully reviewed and evaluated the four candidates who were
invited for the on-campus visit during the last three weeks.

The committee has forwarded to Chancellor Stacy the names of all four
candidates and has recommended them for further consideration.

They are in alphabetical order:

        Dr. Livingston Alexander
Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
        Kean University

        Dr. John Friedl
Dean College of Arts and Sciences
        University of South Alabama

        Dr. Thomas Storch
Dean College of Arts and Sciences
        University of Montana

        Dr. Mary Tanner
Dean College of Education and Applied Professional Studies
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga

In its deliberations the committee exhaustively discussed the positives and
questions we had about each candidate and made this information known to
the Chancellor. We concluded that overall this is a talented, diverse
group and that each of these individuals has the experience and knowledge
to successfully undertake the responsibilities of the position of Provost
at UTC.

We gratefully acknowledge the effort of the campus community who assisted
the committee in the interviewing and evaluating of the finalists.

We thank Susan Cardwell, Assistant to the Chancellor, for her many fine
contributions to the search process and also acknowledge the assistance of
Melissa Cate of the Chancellor's office.

The committee would also like to express our appreciation to Chancellor
Stacy for putting the search firm A. T. Kearney at its disposal. Their
help facilitated our effort to put forward a group of candidates in a
timely fashion.
