Tuesday November 7th at 3pm Hunter 409- Dr Melissa Anyiwo - Rereading the
Oracle in the Matrix - the Mammy in Contemporary Cinema
The Mammy image has proven to be a surprisingly indelible image of black
women in film since she first appeared in DW Griffith's The Birth of a
Nation. Perhaps then it is no surprise that the image of the perfect
domestic goddess would appear in a vision of the future. The Wakowski
Brothers' 1999 epic trilogy, reproduces and at the same time inverts this
age old stereotype. This paper seeks to demonstrate that even in a world
created by machines apparently some roles remain the same for black women.
Open to the public.
