Friends and colleagues,
I just spent the last two hours watching a video recording of the "Campus
Leadership Conference" in Knoxville yesterday, at which the UT strategic
plan was presented by President Petersen and others.
Toward the end of the discussion Petersen revealed that he would like to
see the merit pay plan, which he called "a bullet in [the administation's]
gun" used against staff in the future in the same way the administration
presently uses it against faculty.
Revealingly, he also indicated that local campus administrators had been
given to use funds according to whatever local priorities they wished to
set, including pay. This suggests that the decision to limit faculty pay
increases to one percent, and not to include compression adjustment, is the
responsibility of local administrators.
Finally, he suggested that if the result of any pay adjustment was to
exceed the budget, he could go back to the Board in November to seek added
funding retroactive to July.
Just thought you might like to know.
For all the one per-centers,
