There are few things more demoralizing than reading about high raises at
UTC, along with new hires at high salaries, when we are in an interminable
budget crisis. This is especially true for those of us who have had to
watch new faculty hired at UTC at market rates that are higher than what us
old-timers are making. Whatever the rationale, it is grossly insulting to
find that decades of dedication to UTC counts for less than nothing.
That's the message received by those of us hit by "compression," especially
when faculty with more experience are making less than those with less
experience and even lower rank. At least call it what it is. It's not
compression, it's flagellation.
