UTC's Americorps program was recently awarded $409,230 from the
Tennessee Corporation for National and Community Service to
continue operations in fiscal year 2002-03.  UTC's
program is one of only nine programs funded in Tennessee this year.

With Ms. Gwen Williams as director, Americorps provides
college students with opportunities to earn money and credits
for college tuition through their services in Hamilton
County schools.  AmeriCorps members tutor students at-risk students
in K-3 in reading and, since its beginning, the program has shown
a steady increase in reading scores.

AmeriCorps members provide one-on-one tutoring as well as
mentoring and assisting with school performances, book fairs and carnivals.

Congratulations to Ms. Williams on the continued success of this program
which benefits so many students in the Hamilton County area.
