Dear Colleagues,

Larry Garrison and I will be hosting two more SIS meetings today. The first
will be at 11:00am, the second will be at 3:00pm. Both will be held in the
Signal Mountain room of the University Center. I hope that you will be able
to join in the conversation.

Let me review several of the highlights that came from our last discussion.

1. Build in the requirements for minors in the degree audit process
2. Provide a more sensible system of transcript evaluation for transfer
students, especially those from UT and TBR schools. There was a lengthy
discussion regarding the need for this feature to support undergraduates
transferring to the school as well as students applying for admission into
the various graduate programs.
3. Provide a mechanism to allow faculty to alert students and their
advisors of a student's poor performance in a course (e.g., a process
similar to one used for student athletes)
4. Use of on-line course evaluations to replace paper evaluations and
provide more timely feedback to instructors

An important matter that arose concerned the status of academic policies and
their future within the new Student Information System. This is an important
topic as it had much to do with the aborted to implementation of Banner
several years ago. The entire SIS committee is committed to ensuring that
the implementation of the software WILL CONFORM to the policies and
procedures that have been approved by the faculty. Indeed, the SIS committee
is currently preparing a lengthy document that provides an outline of each
of our current procedures. The vendors will use this document to help them
prepare their bid for the project. This resource will also serve as a guide
for the implementation of the SIS.

I hope that you will be able to attend one of the meetings today to ask
questions about the process and make recommendations about how we can
improve the quality of services we provide.

Best wishes,

David J. Pittenger
