Dear UTC Family,

I want to thank many of you for giving my plant babies new homes. Again I
have quite a number that need to find new homes as soon as possible. Once
again I find that the plants in my yard are trying to crowd each other out
of the light and air and care that they need. The plants I like are those
that are as care-free as possible, but they do keep multiplying. Free
Plants on the I-Point/You Dig basis by pre-arrangement with Mary Tinkler.
But NOT TODAY (Thursday). Tomorrow (Friday) or Saturday will be best.

Sweet Shrub - for years I yearned for a sweet shrub and by assiduous
search, I found one in a Wayside Gardens catalog. I planted it in a good
place, where it has filled up its entire allotted slot and is moving in on
its neighbors. I am moving the whole thing to another spot, but I don't
need to keep it all. Want a start? Good in dry places / shade or sun.
Small maroon flower with spicy scent - a real old timey shrub.

Oregon Grapes - not a grape at all, but a holly type bush with yellow
flowers followed by blue berries in grape-like formations, which are much
loved by jays and cedar waxwings. I have stuffed several into little pots,
but there are more elsewhere.

Blue-Eyed Grass - Loves my yard. Is multiplying beyond belief. Needs
little care. Nice in borders but I noticed it also advertised as a ground
cover. Has a darling bloom in spring - blue with yellow center. Found
this in a garden catalog recently for an unbelievably high price. I think
birds brought it to me.

Iris - I dug up a bunch (@50) yesterday. Pale lavender. Must go. They
are crowding my hosta. I do not have enough sun to make irises happy.
Also, I can see that the giant white ones must be moved. I am willing to
give some of them away.

Lirope - Both the common and variegated monkey grass are quite happy at my
house. Please do not buy any when you can see me and get all you want of
the plain and some of the variegated free. It actively hurts me to see
people buying this!

Ground Covers - ivy, sedum, I am finding baby ivy plants everywhere this
year. Do you yearn for a ground cover that after the first year you can
neglect? Either of these is for you. Lots need to go.

Virgin's Bower - AKA Sweet Autumn Clematis - I got this from Mrs. Irving
Grote in the old days of the UTC Women's Club when I belonged to the
Shakespeare Garden Group. Small white flowers cover the vine in late
summer. Plant roots in shade, but allow sun for bloom. When the sun is
shining the flowers smell lemony.

Lunaria - AKA Money Plant - a biennial. Ugly leaves, but very nice blooms
and wonderful seed pods that are excellent for arrangements. These do not
seem capable of being transplantable, but throwing seeds on a neglected
portion of your yard will give you lots of plants! These are not yet ready
to give away, but keep watching.

All this is by appointment only, please contact me, Mary Tinkler (formerly
of the UTC Athletics Department) at 267-2512 & leave a message or try me at

respond.
