The following information was approved by the UTC Information Technology
Advisory Council to be sent to each students, faculty, and staff to remind
each member of the University community our individual responsibilities on
proper use of campus computers and the UTC network.

UTC Computer Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) and Responsible Computer/Network
use:
With rapidly expanding access to technology and information resources comes
an increased responsibility on the part of each individual. Please take the
time to read and understand the University's Acceptable Use Policies, which
can be found at http://www.utc.edu/Teaching-Resource-Center/AUP/. Remember
that you are responsible for what occurs on your computer, your OneNet
account (email, web, files), and any other UTC computer account in your
name.

Virus Protection:
Today's computer viruses can infect unprotected computers with frightening
speed, spreading to thousands of computers within minutes. All computers
connected to UTC's network should run anti-virus program that is kept
current.

Computer Operating System Updates:
You should also keep your computer's operating system updated to help
prevent it from being exploited by others and to protect your privacy.
Windows computers should be checked at http://windowsupdate.com and set to
update automatically whenever possible. Apple computer users should contact
the Help Desk for update assistance.

Copyright Violations - File Sharing:
The Recording Industry Association of America is starting to sue individuals
for copyright violations using file sharing programs over campus networks
(see http://news.com.com/2100-1027-995429.html?tag=cd_mh. In addition to
creating network congestion, file sharing applications such as Gnutella,
Kazaa, and similar file sharing programs can be used for illegal purposes
involving violation of copyright. Illegal activity by students or employees
is expressly forbidden at UTC and is subject to legal action. Respect for
intellectual property ownership is a fundamental value in academia.
Copyright infringement is against the law and is also a violation of the UTC
Acceptable use policy.

The staff of the Information Technology Division is committed to providing
services that directly support teaching, research, and public service. We
appreciate your cooperation and partnership in using these resources wisely
and appropriately. Please contact the HelpDesk for assistance or questions
on any of these issues: Phone 4000 or email- [log in to unmask]
