Hello,

The National Endowment for the Humanities has announced its 2003 offering
of Summer Seminars and Institutes. You do NOT have to teach humanities to
be eligible for a seminar or institute! Some programs have clear appeal to
non-humanities disciplines -- for example, topics this year include
"Science and Values" and "Ethics at the End of Life".

Seminars and Institutes enable college and university teachers to study
with disciplinary experts. All programs take place in summer 2003 and
last from four to six weeks. Stipends of $2,800, $3,250, or $3,700
(depending on the length of the program) will be awarded to cover costs of
travel, books, research & living expenses. Each SEMINAR includes 15
participants working in collaboration with one or two leading scholars.
Participants will have access to a major library collection, with time
reserved to pursue individual research & study projects. INSTITUTES aim to
prepare participants to return to their classrooms with a deeper knowledge
of scholarship in key fields of the humanities.

Twenty Seminars and nine Institutes will be offered in summer 2003,
including an institute directed by UTC's Dr. Irv Resnick. Applications are
due March 1, 2003; to apply, contact the seminar or institute
director. For topics, dates, locations of programs, and contact
information for applications, see
