Hello,

I sent this message out the week before classes began. There have been a
few responses and thought it be helpful to send another reminder.
***************************************************************************************************************************************************

I wanted to share with you some opportunities we have to showcase academic
departments to prospective students this year.

The Center for Community Career Education is working with two school
systems in our Walker/Bradley County GEAR UP initiative. The other two
GEAR UP initiatives on campus (Dr. Huckabay's projects) serve students in
Hamilton County schools. We have several opportunities coming up for UTC
to showcase their departments to 8th grade students. We would appreciate
your assistance.

1. Career Crunch: November 19 and 20, 8-4:30pm, UTC Arena.
This is the second annual Career Crunch. Sponsored by the Chattanooga Area
Chamber of Commerce this event is host to over 3,500 eighth graders from
Hamilton County and north Georgia. Last year the event was held at
Chattanooga State. It is UTC's turn this year!

The Chamber has invited UTC to provide displays that give students a
hands-on opportunity to explore our various programs.
         Examples:

a. RN, listening to the heart and lung sounds.
b. Electrical Engineering: hooking up electrical circuits.
c. Criminal Justice: DUI Simulator, Radar, Fingerprinting/Trace Evidence
d. Foreign Language: practice phrases in foreign languages.

This is just a sampling of ideas. It would be ideal to have UTC students
provide the man/woman power for this event.

2. Career Day In Detail: October 7, 3:30-7pm : Rossville Middle
School
This event is being planned in collaboration with Northwestern Technical
College, Dalton College and UTC. Students will attend this late afternoon
event with their parents and will be able to see opportunities in career
clusters.
Example: Construction Cluster
Students will explore the entire spectrum of the construction industry from
hands-on hammering/nailing activities to computer aided design.

At each career level students will be given information on that career,
potential salary and required education.

Both of these events will provide students with wonderful opportunities as
they plan their high school and college coursework. Additionally, these
events will serve to guide students toward a specific career cluster, at
which point mentors will be assigned based on students' particular area of
interest.

If you are interested please reply to this email and I will send more
information on these events.

Please call by September 13 and let us know if you will be representing
your department at these events. Thank you.

Sandy
