The fall 2001 Burkett Miller Distinguished Lecture Series will also
feature Linda Chavez, President of the Center for Equal Opportunity.
Ms. Chavez will speak on the topic of Affirmative Action Thursday,
November 1, 2001 at noon in the Roland Hayes Hall. Ms. Chavez states
that she opposes racial preferences because they are unfair,
unconstitutional, and do not achieve their intended purpose of helping
minorities. She also contends that college admissions programs aimed at
minorities are a notorious example of good intentions gone awry.

We are seeking a faculty member to serve as commentator for this lecture
and are particularly interested in those with substantiated views
differing from the speaker’s. We seek logical, established arguments in
support of affirmative action programs and racial preferences in hiring,
admissions and contracting. Commentary must be of broadcast quality,
and an honorarium will be provided.

Linda Chavez writes a weekly syndicated column appearing in newspapers
across the country and is the author of Out of the Barrio: Toward a New
Politics of Hispanic Assimilation. In 2000, Chavez was honored by the
Library of Congress as a “Living Legend” for her contributions to
America’s cultural and historical legacy. The arguments she will offer
are available from these sources.

Expressions of interest should be directed to [log in to unmask] and should
indicate the faculty member’s area of expertise and experience.
