COUNCIL OF DEANS
April 13, 1999

PRESENT:        W. Aiken, D. Arfken, B. Berry, T. Bibler, S. Delacroix, L.
Fletcher, J. Harbaugh, G. Janeksela, T. Summerlin, M. Willis

Approval of Minutes
The minutes of March 30, 1999, were approved.

Departmental Plans
Dr. Berry once again stressed to the deans the importance of ensuring that
departmental bylaws are done and done well.  There should be at least two
measures of teacher effectiveness, and a statement of standards should be
included.

Technology Planning Priorities
Dr. Berry informed the council that the University Technology Committee had
identified the following priorities for technology for the upcoming fiscal
year.

· Classroom audiovisual equipment (campus-wide or departmental)
· Library indexes
· Student microcomputing labs (hardware and software updates and expanded
hours)
· Technology to support general education requirements
· Computer classrooms (teaching spaces)
· Infrastructure (networking, etc.)

School/College/Division Reports
Ms. Sheila Delacroix announced that the Southern Writers Conference will be
held Thursday-Saturday, April 15-17.  She invited everyone to the Eudora
Welty photograph exhibit in the library.

Dr. Jane Harbaugh announced that Ms. Kay Gibbons will be speaking on
Thursday at 1:00 in connection with the Conference on Southern Literature.
She encouraged everyone to attend.

Dr. Deborah Arfken applauded the conference this year for its attempt to
add more diversity to the program, i.e., music, theatre, and film.

Dr. Bill Aiken distributed copies of the Academic Affairs budget presentation.

Dr. Tim Summerlin congratulated the Fellowship of Southern Writers
committee on such a good program.  He encouraged everyone to attend a
reading of Wit, Margaret Edson's Pulitzer prize winning play, to be read in
the Fine Arts Center on Thursday.

A motion to adjourn was moved and seconded.
