Hello all,

Those of you who, like me, are very concerned about the negative effects
of the proposed conversion of McCallie Avenue and Bailey Avenue/Martin
Luther King Boulevard to two-way streets might want to read the
following article on the chattanoogan.com website. It concerns a study
just completed by the Chattanooga Engineers Club regarding the proposed
project. The CEC study raises some of the same serious questions I
brought up last Spring: reduced traffic flow, decreased vehicle and
pedestrian safety, and a cost several times higher than predicted by the
Glatting Jackson study earlier this year.

The following is a link to an article I posted back in March outlining
my objections to the proposed changes:

http://www.chattanoogan.com/articles/article_19371.asp

Not long before that, I conducted an informal survey of faculty and
staff which found 78% of respondents opposed, 13% undecided, and only 9%
in favor of the two-way conversion. There still may be a chance to get
the city council to reconsider what many of us consider to be an
ill-advised move. If you agree with the concerns expressed in the CEC
report and think that this project should be scrapped or at least
reconsidered, now would be a great time to write city officials and/or
send a letter to the editor of the Times/Free Press or other
publications. If enough citizens make their concerns known we can still
make a difference!
