choices in an email. Please choose one adult, one middle school and one
children's book from the following finalists:

Books for Adults

_____Nine Horses by Billy Collins - The latest collection by the United
States Poet Laureate for 2001-2003 sparkles with wit and imagination.
Everyday items and activities are viewed with a sharp and discerning eye.

_____Walking Across Egypt by Clyde Edgerton - Mattie Rigsbee is an
independent and strong-minded senior citizen whose life is disrupted when
she meets young delinquent Wesley Bendfield and his stray dog. Mattie soon
learns that Christian charity comes with a price but could just be worth it.

_____All But My Life by Gerda Klein - Gerda Klein's celebrated account of
her three frightful years as a Nazi prisoner and the life she rebuilt after
the war.

Books for Middle School Students

_____Whirligig by Paul Fleischman - While traveling to each corner of the
country to build a whirligig in memory of the girl whose death he causes,
16-year-old Brian finds forgiveness and atonement.


_____Hoot by Carl Hiaasen - Roy, who is new to his small Florida community,
become involved in another boy's attempt to save a colony of burrowing owls
from a proposed construction site.

_____A Long Way from Chicago by Richard Peck - Each summer throughout the
nine years of the Great Depression, Joey and his sister Mary Alice from
Chicago visit their grandmother's sleepy Illinois town. Each summer they
discover a visit to Grandma Dowdel's is far from typical.



Books for Children

_____Joyful Noise: Poems for Two Voices by Paul Fleischman - Fourteen poems
from the insect world, with subjects ranging from grasshoppers to
butterflies. A Newbery Medal award-winning book.

_____Thank You Mr. Falker by Patricia Polacco - At first, Trisha loves
school, but her difficulty learning to read makes her feel dumb.  Her life
is changed in the fifth grade when a new teacher helps her understand and
overcome her problem.

_____ If I Were In Charge of the World and Other Worries: Poems for
Children and Their Parents  by Judith Viorst  This book of 41 poems is for
everyone who has ever had trouble apologizing, talked too much, or burped.
These poems are for everyone who could use a little help in turning worries
into laughter.
