The UTC community is invited to a free public concert and a chance for
hands-on experience of the unique Indonesian gamelan orchestra. Gamelan,
or gongs, have been a unique expression of Southeast Asian culture and
values, often performed with a puppet play.
The Emory University Ensemble, consisting of 15-18 faculty and staff, will
be playing in conjunction with the 41st Annual Meeting of the Southeast
Conference/Association for Asian Studies, hosted by the UTC Asia Program.
The performance will be accompanied by video and explanations by Dr. Steven
Everett, Director of the group. He will explain the history, meaning, and
various forms of gamelan. After the formal program, members of the audience
will be asked to try the instruments.
The concert is 8:00 P.M. on Friday night, January 18, in the Continental
Room (Mezzanine Level) of the Read House Hotel in downtown Chattanooga.
There is also a workshop for world history teachers on Saturday, January
19th, and academic panels on all aspects of Asian history and culture on
that day and Sunday. All sessions are open to UTC faculty and students free
of charge, but you should notify Cindy Williams at 755-4561 so we will can
prepare name badges. The luncheon and evening reception at the Tennessee
Aquarium are also available at $15 each, payable in advance to the UTC Asia
Program. We must receive this by May 15th.
