If your TCP/IP control is set to DHCP Server, the university's
computers will assign to you a unique IP number.  The only time a
problem like the one you describes occurs is when your TCP/IP control
is set to manual.  Seven or eight years ago, our computers were,
indeed, assigned unique IP numbers.  However, that's an old,
abandoned system.
