During January the Department of Philosophy and Religion will be
interviewing three candidates on campus for a tenure-track position in
Asian religions. Each will be making a public presentation as part of the
interview, and the Department would like to invite colleagues who are
interested in the study of Asia to attend.
The final presentation will be given on Monday, January 25, at 2:00 pm in
Holt 204 by Mark Berkson. He is a doctoral candidate in Religious Studies
at Stanford, where he is completing a disseration entitled Death and the
Self in Ancient Chinese Thought. He has a continuing interest in
Buddhist-Christian dialogue, a subject on which he has written serveral
papers. He has lived in Taiwan for several years and has taught a variety
of courses at the University of San Francisco.
The title of his presentation is "The Ritual Creation of the Self: A
Comparative Study of Xunzi on Death."
