Dr. Roland Carter, UC Foundation Professor and Ruth S. Holmberg Professor of
American Music, was recently elected President of the National Association of
Negro Musicians Incorporated (NANM) at NANM’s 83rd conference held in New
York
City, as reported by the Associated Press.

NANM, which was founded in 1919, is dedicated to the preservation, advocacy
and encouragement of all genres of music of African-Americans in the world.

Dr. Carter served for six years as the head of UTC’s Cadek Department of
Music
and Conservatory. In addition, Dr. Carter founded and is the CEO of MAR-VEL,
which is a publisher that specializes in music and traditions of
African-American composers. As a life-long member of NANM, Dr. Carter desires
to increase the membership and create new opportunities for talented youth
and
merging artists during his two-year term as NANM president.

Congratulations to Dr. Carter for this important honor.
