To all Faculty and Professional Staff,

The Counseling and Career Planning Center is pleased to announce our
upcoming PSYCH O' CINEMA presentation on November 16 in the Raccoon Mtn.
Room of the University Center.

We have chosen the independent, highly acclaimed PIECES OF APRIL . The
setting, Thanksgiving Day, isn't a coincidence, nor is the theme of this
movie. April (played by the more recently well-known Katie Holmes) is a
young adult living in New York City and struggling to find herself. In
an effort to help mend a deeply troubled relationship with her family,
especially her mother, she has persuaded the family to come to New York
for Thanksgiving and has taken on the mammoth tasks of preparing the
traditional "feast" (made a bit more difficult by the facts that the
apartment she shares with her boyfriend is small, it is also located in
a part of the city her parents are not likely to be thrilled with, and
her culinary skills rely heavily on can openers and a stove... which
doesn't work). This is one of those poignant comedy/dramas that convey
some very powerful themes about family relationships, diversity, and
intimacy. We believe students will relate to its style and the
characters in a way that will stimulate thought and introspection.

The PSYCH O' CINEMA series consists of movies chosen as an educational
experience for our students and as an adjunct activity for classes in
social sciences, creative arts, communication, and education. They are
meant to appeal to the college-age adult and artistically express
pertinent themes in human relationships, culture, society, and
philosophical/psychological perspectives. Following the presentation of
the movie, the students are divided into groups and a facilitator leads
a discussion of pertinent themes and points of view related to what they
have viewed. It is an ideal assignment for extra credit or whatever
other way you choose to incorporate it into your course. On request, we
can maintain a class roll, and we will provide you with test questions
(whatever format you desire, including essay questions) that can be
customized for your class. Naturally all instructors are encouraged to
attend as well.
