As many of you already know, George Connor's "Living
with the Word," a collection of George
Connor's previously uncollected writing edited by Charles
Thornbury, has recently been published.
Some people have asked how to purchase the book. It is
only being sold so far through the Connor
Society , which has as its office the law practice of Herbert
Thornbury at 732 Cherry Street, Chattanooga,
TN 37402. The book sells for $19. Inside the cover is a
post card addressed to the Connor Society
requesting a free copy of a biography of George which
should be completed by Charles Thornbury some time next year.
All money raised by the book will go to setting up
funds through the UC Foundation for a Connor Society lecture
which we expect will occur every September in honor of
George. The last two lectures have been given by novelist
and theologian Frederick Buechner and novelist and short story
writer Allen Wier. Since George's interests were varied,
the speakers will be varied as well. They will not always
be from the field of literature.
George retired from the university nearly twenty
years ago. While he was first and foremost a
teacher, he had a remarkable record of public service. He
established the Arts and Education Council,
the Friends of the Library, and he was extremely active in
civic pursuits and the interests of his faith.
At the book launch on Sunday in the Faculty Club I saw the
present editor of our newspaper and a former mayor-- all
former students whose lives George helped to shape. George
had a vision of what a university should be and what a
city should be that still influences our lives, and that
vision was
conveyed in remarkably crafted lectures , essays, and letters.
On Monday I walked over a gift copy of this book
to the UTC Library, but some time may pass before it reaches
the shelves. Those who cannot bear delay might purchase
a copy from Herbert
Thornbury.
