Tuesday, July 24
·       Urban Presenter  Ken Howey President of UNITE (Urban Network to 
Improve Teacher Education)  UNITE is part of the Holmes group.
o         Strengthening Urban Teacher Education as an All-University Endeavor
o       Achieving Fundamental Improvements in Professional Programs 
Targeted for Teachers in Urban Schools -Socializing teachers to 
work        together and developing thoughtful, structured experiences in 
urban communities
o       Extending Urban Teacher Preparation in a Seamless Manner into the 
First Year(s) of Teaching
o       Helping Urban Parents Help Their Children Learn
o       Putting in Place Integrated K-16 Policy Boards at the State Level

·       Best practices in contextual teaching & learning in pre-service 
teacher education programs: Susan Hersh from Ohio State University -
o       Characteristics of Contextual Teaching and Learning  Is 
problem-based; occurs in multiple contexts such as schools, homes, 
worksites and communities; fosters self-regulated learning; anchors 
teaching and learning in students’ diverse life contexts; employs authentic 
assessment; and utilizes interdependent learning groups.

·       Understanding and Educating African American Children
William Jenkins, an English teacher and minister from St. Louis, Missouri 
and colleague of Dr. Marvin Lott, principal at Brainerd High.  He was 
involved in the Civil Rights Movement of the Sixties.  Find out more about
